Mr Hide, Mr Alford and Mr Smith all sustained convictions as a result of separate ‘sting’ operations by Mazher Mahmood, “The Fake Sheikh”.
All three men received disclosure packs from the CPS thanks to comments made by the Recorder of Southwark, HHJ McCreath, in July 2014, and have now applied to the CCRC (Criminal Case Review Commission) to have these convictions reviewed and referred to the Court of Appeal.

The problem with writing a review, for the person writing it at least, is where to begin. And it is no different for me this time round trying to find the words to describe Jonathan Royle’s new show Egg, Sausage and Peas (ESP). Finding the right starting point is a bit of a conundrum. Should I comment on the finale of the show, expose the twists and turns or tell you about my favourite routine?
I’ve decided to answer no to all these questions and begin by telling you a little bit about Jonathan as a performer, then I’ll move on to the show as a whole. Leaving the twists and turns a surprise for those of you who decide to go and watch the show yourselves.
Jonathan is quite obviously a professional performer who has put a lot of effort into designing his on stage persona. From the moment he walks out on stage in his bespoke suit you can tell.
Before watching ESP I had not seen one of Jonathan’s shows before and to be honest I was expecting to see another Derren Brown clone. I’m sure many reading this will know what I’m talking about. Those mentalists with a little beard who use “psychology, magic, misdirection and showmanship” to create a poor recreation of Derren’s show.
This was not the case with Jonathan. Yes, he makes claims to using psychology. Yes, to the highly trained eye of the magician he uses magical techniques. Yes, he misdirects his audience with the expertise of a top showman. But when you watch him do it you’re not thinking to yourself: “well he’s obviously got the Mind Control box set permanently playing in every room in his house”.
Jonathan is a unique performer that has put his own spin on what has become a very factory line area of the magical arts.
So, what of the effects?
In a nutshell what Jonathan gives to his audience is of an extremely high quality. The effects themselves are baffling and there are many aspects that will fool even the more knowledgeable of magicians and mentalists. I have seen more magic shows than I care to admit to and I have sat through more bad magic shows than good.
This isn’t one of the bad ones.
There were many plots that I’d seen before, but Jonathan performed them in his way rather than just rehashing what had come before. What was a breath of fresh air was to see a fair number of effects that I can only assume are unique to Jonathan, as I had never seen them performed before.
The first half of Jonathan’s show is a selection of classic mentalism effects that build from a simple one-in-three chance to tackling the Holy Grail of mentalism (ACAAN) in a very clever way.
I enjoyed the first half immensely. The belly button routine was simultaneously unique, clever and very funny. However, I felt that Jonathan should have ended on his penultimate effect rather than the think of a number effect. I didn’t like the way this played out at all. And although he managed to get away with it, this isn’t how I would personally want to end the first half of my show; namely by just getting away with it.
For me, I would have liked Jonathan to end this half of the show on the card trick. It’s strong and seems completely impossible. This was a three-phase routine that has a truly killer ending. Even if the final trick had worked as it was supposed to it still would have been very anti-climatic to what had come before: Less being more and all that.
The second half adopts a change of pace that is mimicked by Jonathan’s change of costume to a more casual look.
This half of the show sees Jonathan play with the idea of celebrity, tell a tale of the demise of his grandmother’s mental faculties (resulting in her destroying her own house) and play a game using his daughter’s DVD book. But for me the highlight has to be the game he plays with a 6” nail. He calls it the table of death, but magicians will know it as the Russian roulette plot.
I have to say that this routine was not only the highlight of the second half, but the whole show. It is absolutely fantastic. From start to finish Jonathan builds the suspense to a point where the room is quite simply electric.
Members of the audience mix a cup with the nail under it with five others that don’t contain anything at all.
Then, and this is where Jonathan’s routine differs from others I’ve seen, he allows audience members to name numbers at random. He then crushes those named cups with his bare hands.
What I especially loved about Jonathan’s Russian roulette routine is the fact that the final spectator was allowed to change their mind. And when they did Jonathan simply crushed the number they’d switched to and revealed the final cup to contain the spike!
The Table of Death is simply stunning and a real magician fooler.
So to sum up.
In short Jonathan Royle’s show Eggs, Sausage and Peas (ESP) is a fantastic example of modern mentalism done well. He is one of those rare performers who stand out as unique among a host of bearded clones in a crowded field. Jonathan Royle graces the stage with his ability to second guess decisions you will make, predict impossible things and even scare the living S#* t out of you.
He will cause a spectators family member, “called on the phone” to name three random cards selected by three audience members.
He will predict things that no normal person should be able to foresee.
Jonathan will show you a video of other magicians failing at the most dangerous trick known in the world of magic, and why you should never try this at home. He then proceeds to smash his hand down on five polystyrene cups, avoiding a nasty 6″ sharp nail.
You will see spectators impossibly draw the same picture, even though they are six feet away.
What Jonathan’s show has, is an edgy feel to it. These experiments don’t always go according to plan. So if you want to be a part of something unique, then his show is a once in a lifetime thrill that you won’t forget.
The best part of Jonathan’s performance, is his ability to motivate you and make you leave feeling positive that you can achieve anything, as long as you have belief.
Jonathan claims he is using NLP, body language and subtle cues to know what your thinking, but I think you will leave believing he can really read your mind.
You will even have the chance to be a celebrity for the night as he predicts random decisions you make.
Jonathan’s combination of hypnosis comedy and mind stunts will keep you on the edge of your seat.
I would like to thank Jonathon for allowing me to review his show Eggs Sausage Peas and I will do this in 2 parts, so here is part 1. The show overall was excellent and I urge anyone who has the opportunity to see this to pencil a date in your diary as a must, if the show is in your area.
Ok the show itself was well routined a mixture of old techniques and Jonathans own unique effects and twists and variations on old techniques modernised for a modern audience. The opening of his show was in my opinion the weakest effect of the night a 3 card routine which might have been better placed elsewhere as i expected a strong and visual opening, but then what was to come made up for this.
The ACAAN was possibly the best version of the effect I have ever seen and the belly button reading was hilarious, variation after variation and multiple reveals and this slayed the audience.
The second half was faster paced and had a serious element with his version of Russian Roulette and 6 cups were used, not 4 or 5 that some other mentalists use, and I’ve even seen mentalists use just 3, so with the opening showing video footage of accidents and the Halloween theme belting out, this created atmosphere, and when mixed up and then the audience picked the order of cups he was to hit, made for a dramatic and tense moment and the successful conclusion was rewarded by a huge cheer and clapping.

Part 2 of review of Eggs Sausage Peas. As a mentalist and hypnotist albeit for 18 months, i think its an excellent idea to use the show as the basis of a mentalists training course. I already have 2 training courses from Jonathan and he is an excellent teacher and guide and will aid beginners into becoming more successful and more seasoned ones better performers.
There is a lack of mentalists training courses out there, in fact none as far as I know yet there are many books and effects on the market, however these cant teach you how to put a show together, the best opening and closing effect, audience management, routining a show and marketing a show etc, that would benefit the genre.
I use ACAAN and have 2 versions, yet Jonathon blew me away, and I use a chair test, yet Jonathan had audience members stand up for a variation unique to him and again excellent.
Now not everyone will want to do a Russian Roulette type effect, but again everyone will have their own unique style of performing, so its getting the right effects for your style, and so there is a need for a concise training product.
I don’t expect Jonathon would give away performing rights with this training package, but if he did it would be the must have mentalists product of the year, however even without that, its still a package that all budding mentalists need to add to their library as his training and teaching are second to none . His smartly-devised, mult-phased routining and effects rule out reverse-engineering as a possible tool to try to figure out how he does many of his very original and entertaining effects. A routine that begins like the classic “Seven (in Jonathan’s case, five) Keys to Baldplate,” takes approximately 5 sharp turns, each with its own huge kicker, ending in an impossible birth year prediction that opens the combination padlock, releasing a volunteer’s wedding band. Strong, commercial material here. His Russian Roulette involving a jumbo, steel nail, is very strong: 2 hands, 6 cups, 1 nail and audience members steering the direction (no forcing) of the cup-smashing. Jonathan adds the right amount of drama needed to sell this effect to a lay audience and magicians ‘who know,’ will be scratching their heads at his presentation. Jonathan’s endearing story of his daughter, leads us to his “DVD Book” test which is strongly unique with an apparent ‘Magi screwed up-type ending,’ but actually ends correct as a visual and mental stunner – a very commercial piece. His closing piece involves ESP cards, but before you sigh, “really?!…”, bite your tongue, sit down, watch and take notes. The way that Jonathan gets audience members to pair up matching ESP cards is uncanny, the reveal is strong (seeing a theme here?), stretched out over time giving his audience one more unbelievable, compounded routine with multiple climaxes. Jonathan Royle smashes his hand down onto a polystyrene cup that could hide an upturned sharpened spike within.
The absence of screaming, and the lack of blood, tell his audience that, thankfully, it doesn’t — this time. But there are three more cups to go. Does he guess right?
You’ll have to go along yourself to Jonathan’s new show — oddly titled Eggs, Suasage, and Peas — to find out.
And once you’ve sat through the numerous videos of the illusion going horribly wrong, you’ll rather wish he does. If only to ensure you’ll get at least one chance to see him in action again.
I was not alone in the audience, I’m sure, in hoping he’d announce after the gory videos that he wasn’t daft enough to perform the trick after all, and could anyone think of a card, any card?
My heart has only just left my mouth and returned to it’s rightful place in my chest.
This was just a taster preview of Jonathan’s new mentalism show, held at one of my favourite pubs The Kings Arms in Salford. The full show will be revealed next month.
After an opening half full of mysterious illusion, the second half of the show was a little darker with tales of his dead grandmother.
I don’t want to give too much of the show away, but if you get a chance to see it then I recommend you do. The man is unique.
I hope to see more from his amazing mind in the future. Can’t wait for the full show in April.

Jonathan Royle takes to the stage and commands the respect of his audience from the outset!
Having seen the show that lasts for over 2 hours of Mental Magic, with E.S.P. hence the shows title Egg, Sausage and Peas, he wastes no time in getting 5 volunteers up onto the stage, and what for, of all things to do a great set of ESP finishing off with an hilarious belly button reading routine that had the audience in stitches.
The first half of the show closes with one of the best MAGIC NUMBERS SQUARE You are ever likely to see, as its not expected from anyone until the final reveal, taking everybody by surprise even Magicians as when you realize its to late!
After a short break Jonathan aka Alex does a costume change, looking smart and casual and again takes to the stage with more E,S,P, and mind reading plus as a bonus a little Hypnotic effects and again lots of audience participation, If I remember correctly he had over 20 people up on stage during the 2 halves.
One very funny routine involves 5 members of the audience choosing his daughter a cartoon character to read for a bedtime story, at the end the audience are duped into thinking the trick has gone terribly wrong for Jonathan, How wrong they are when Jonathon takes the paper bag off his head to reveal he knew all along what they had chosen, I won’t give the ending away to this, as I do not wish to spoil it for anyone.
So I suggest you go and see Egg Sausage and Peas LIVE you will Not be disappointed, and the show is really good value for money.
Lastly Jonathon performs a trick I also perform Smash and Stab? But I have to say His version blew me away, and is totally different version to mine or in fact to any version I have seen, and I have absolutely NO idea how he did it.
Starting off with a warning Video on the big screen of other magicians getting it really wrong and warning the audience of the dangers and NOT TO TRY THIS THEMSELVES.
Using 6 cups ( not the usual 4 ) the spectator puts a 6inch metal nail onto one of the cups facing straight up, then the spectator mixes them up so no one knows where the nail is, the cups are then numbered 1 to 6 and Mr. Royle simply just asks 5 audience members one at a time to simply choose a number…
and then as each number is chosen that is the cup he slams his hand down onto, I have not got a clue how he did this and in a way I’m happy about this fact as I loved it.
So for a great night out, and to see a great show performed by a Mentalist who really knows his craft, you could not really do any better than popping along and seeing the show Egg, Sausage, and Peas, LIVE for yourself, and take along some friends especially the skeptic ones it will really kick them right in there heads!
It’s a show you will enjoy and walk away wondering If he has powers or was it just good trickery,….who cares it’s a good show…..

Can Clinical Hypnotherapists Learn From Stage Hypnotists? by Steve Miller.
As a Clinical Practitioner I have always been fascinated by stage hypnotists. Stage is something I would personally never do, however with an open mind and an open heart I set out recently on a journey to understand whether Clinical Hypnotherapists could benefit from listening to the strategies employed by stage hypnotists.
I came across a guy called Jonathan Royle AKA Alex William Smith who I perceived as a radical experienced stage hypnotist but someone who also treats clinical conditions.
Having made contact some time ago I found him straight talking (my preference) and incredibly knowledgeable. Having posed my question to Mr Royle he kindly invited me to sit in one of his training programmes which I did yesterday.
I attended with an open mind and throughout the day listened carefully to his view that hypnosis does not really exist and was nothing more than a ritualistic process.
Indeed I was intrigued to know more and as he continued with what can only be described as an incredible knowledge of hypnosis, my mind opened to his standpoint.
As the day continued he demonstrated his talent for both stage and clinical hypnosis, demonstrating showmanship and rapid induction techniques.
His view that success comes from the practitioner’s own confidence and self belief is something I share. What also struck me was his passion for ethics and care of the client, as well as health and safety in the consulting room.
The day was delivered in a forthright manner and I drew the conclusion that perhaps the day has arrived for clinical schools to open their doors to teaching advanced showmanship and persona management for Hypnotherapists.
As for the question whether or not hypnosis really truly exists, the jury is still out. One thing for sure however is that we should perhaps listen a little more and have an open mind so that we all learn from each other.

I suspect that many hypnotists will not like what Royle has to say at first, however, If they can open their own minds to get past this hurdle they will learn a lot more than they bargained for. CONFESSIONS OF A HYPNOTIST – THE BOOK
Never let it be said that Mrs Royle’s youngest rests on his laurels. Not content with producing countless seminars, he’s now compiled his very own encyclopaedia of hypnosis. There are similarities to Ormond McGill’s collective works, however Jonathan has opted for a grass roots approach detailing in full how to become successful in the cut throat world of stage and therapeutic hypnosis. The therapy side of hypnosis is thoroughly explained in layman’s terms. From basic induction techniques to NLP through to regression and phobias. The real meat of the book however lies in his expose of the psychedelic mind fest of stage hypnosis. Each intriguing piece of a stage show is dissected, from the initial cheesy advertising poster to the end of show stopping routine. For a novice to showbiz, Royle guides you through your virginal shows in murky fleapit pubs to lavish spectaculars in 2,000 seater theatres. All the classic induction’s and suggestibility tests are here: the handclasp, falling backwards, plus some very dodgy ones indeed! Although sections of the book list routines that can be found in numerous publications, the author methodically explains how each trance is induced. More importantly, the elusive tricks and stage whispers needed for the whole hypnotic illusion to take place. This is where the book really comes alive. Such a refreshing step by step approach that will arm an amateur with the knowledge to confidently convince a grown man that he is a chicken! Later on Jonathan informs the reader how to gauge the difference between depth of trance … and Guinness induced hysteria! The looming spectre of the 1952 hypnotism act and jittery local councils denying permits, are minefields that Royle navigates through with guile that would make Del Trotter proud. His years as a publicity prankster weren’t wasted as he enlightens us on the genteel art of marketing strategies that will enable the reader to gain maximum exposure without wearing red lycra in the big brother house! Both ends of the hypnotic spectrum are covered, from mucky midnight adult shows, to family shows that are cleaner than a nun’s conscience. Can this be the same Royle who gets his wages paid by direct debit straight into the swear box? Surely not! There is also a quirky section on inducing trance in animals. You never know when you will need to hypnotize a chicken … well; sometimes volunteers are thin on the ground. The novice Mesmerist need not worry about running low on material, our lad has come up trumps and provided endless japes for your boozed up subjects to play along to. This weighty volume also contains a few show stopping hypnotricks, that include the notorious full body catalepsy. A trick made infamous by sleazy tabloid journalists and vengeful solicitors alike. A good read and a possible stepping stone to stardom.

Just quick note to say thanks for the DVDs – ‘There’s no such thing as hypnosis’. I really enjoyed watching the DVDs. Bought them off ebay from you. I’m a GP and have always been extremely sceptical about a lot of things. Hypnosis, homeopathy, acupuncture, osteopathy, pretty well anything alternative as little other than placebo effect. I’m also an amateur magician – hobbiest – and enjoy fooling people. Been member of Newcastle Magic Circle for 15yrs. Makes me think of the rituals that go on with a visit to the doctors, how people expect certain things. E.g. it’s a waste of time examining people the majority of the time. Most doctors have a pretty good idea of the problem within 30secs of a patient coming in. We have to have our rituals though to establish credibility! Thinking about branching out into hypnotherapy now – think of the credentials – known, respected GP. Clients will be well ‘hypnotised’ before entering the room. If you are a psychic entertainer or reader looking for something novel to add to your repertoire that will get you noticed then this book is for you. If you’d rather not get great advice on how to gather lots of free publicity in the media then bypass this book.
As far as readings is concerned you will learn about belly button readings and Pet Paw readings. His method of belly button reading – nicely named by him as Navel Gazing – is a case study of how to take a standard New Age belief (such as Chakra points) and turn them into a convincing, commercial and fun method of reading. You may not take up Navel Gazing yourself but you will certainly be inspired to come up with your own original reading methods. This is also the first time I’ve seen mention of Psychic Healing made in a text for Mentalists and his handling of it is something I find acceptable. You don’t make any outrageous claims but what you do could well help people. What’s great in particular about this book is that it doesn’t just give you some great “how to’s” but also tells you WHAT to do with the methods. You’ll find out how he has successfully used his methods of belly button reading and paw reading for pets to get on radio, television and get lots of features in national magazines. As if learning how to read belly buttons and dog paws isn’t enough you also get a heap of stunts suitable for the psychic entertainer that are practically guaranteed to get you noticed. Whilst some of them may not be entirely original, Jonathon gives them an update and puts his own unique spin on them. Some of them are risky however and it has to be said you’d need to be pretty sure of your aims to want to carry them out. Fun reading nevertheless! Where else would you find valuable information on publicity gaining gems such as “Hosepipe Readings” or creating designer babies via astrology? All in all, this is a valuable resource for anyone interested in getting a reputation as a psychic wonder worker. It’s true to say though that you need a bit of chutzpah to pull the stunts off but I think most psychic entertainers have the required chutzpah or they wouldn’t be working in the field. This simple but logical information would be useful to therapists, Hypnotherapists and psychic readers as well. Anyhow here is the review which only came about because so many people in the Magic World could not believe (at that time) how excellent my training products are as follows:
Mr. Royle, I have now had the chance to look at ‘most’ of your dvd’s (I apologise, but time simply would not allow a complete review). There is not a doubt in my mind that you understand the hypnosis process and are able to teach it. Also you have the experience to guide another person through the marketing of such a process. With this in mind it would be fair to say that a fee of say £400-£500 would pay for itself, providing of course that the recipient actionised their new found knowledge. This as you know, is where of course most of them fall down. However, based on the brief I was given, I am willing to write my findings to the magic/mentalist group (I don’t know the name but both you and my contact does) that this query came from.
In all fairness I think first of all I should let you see what my intended letter to should be. Then I will allow you to reply to me through e-mail if you are happy with this. Then I will send it off to them. Here is the letter: In looking at Jonathon Royle’s DVD sets it becomes only too obvious that here we see in all fairness what can only be described as a consumate performer. This can be seen through his demeanour, dress sense, voice modulation and complete confidence. A man who has totally learned his trade and is a highly skilled lecturer in conveying the methods of how to use these skills. Royle comes across in these lectures as an incredibly likeable character. A ‘Jack the lad’ who’s audience management skills are second to none. This becomes obvious as you see how he skillfully weaves his audience, bringing them closer to him over the weekend training seminar they attend. It becomes apparent that any ‘bad press’ Royle has had over the years has mainly been orchestrated by himself and for the reasons of self-marketing. However, it is with complete conviction that both myself and colleagues can say that yes, this is one master hypnotist who’s DVD’s are certainly worth the money and would also strongly recommend physically attending his course on hypnosis. Dr. Jonathan Royle is a controversial character in the world ofhypnosis, perhaps better known for his shameless self-promotion, murky, chequered past and public arguments with various other hypnotists.
On his latest DVD set, he is loud and swears too much for my liking. He’s arrogant and opinionated and obviously has an over-inflated ego. So why is it that I actually find him likable and funny while watching ”Transparency Template – The revolutionary Guide for Hypnotists?”
I’m not sure, but what I do know is that I really like this DVD set and you probably will too.
This is very detailed and comprehensive home study course covering all of the important stuff you simply need to know if you’re even considering setting foot on stage, street or anywhere and calling yourself a hypnotist.
He dispenses with a lot of the usual theory behind hypnosis but in its place he spends an extraordinary amount of time discussing the legal, licensing and insurance issues which are always such a hot topic in the UK.
However, the advice and guidelines are presented in such a way as to make perfect sense, relevant to any hypnotist anywhere in the world.
I was expecting him to air a couple of “personal beefs” during his presentation and was even prepared for them to leave a nasty taste in my mouth, but I have to say for the relatively short space of time he spends on this (a couple of minutes at most) what comes across first and foremost is his genuine concern for the art. And you really can’t knock him for that.
If you look hard, you will find inevitable contradictions throughout the course, but Jonathan happily admits up front: Hypnosis is full of paradoxes.
Attention to safety for me is a win-win situation. While clients, audiences and volunteers might not always outwardly thank you for it, if it permeates what you do it shows a professional and caring nature behind all the laughter and crazy antics and helps get you booked and re-booked.
Furthermore, fellow professionals really appreciate it too. During this course, the safety aspects are covered with fine, almost paranoid attention to detail and I applaud Jonathan Royle for this.
One thing that really stands out is that he doesn’t ignore any of the problems and dangers a hypnotist is likely to face.
He doesn’t even just give them an honorary mention. He faces them head on and discusses them in the manner of one who has been there, done that and worn the t-shirt and implores you to learn from his own stuff-ups.
“Common sense” is mentioned frequently in relation to safety and most of it is, but a lot of what’s taught here should be mandatory for any hypnotist whether you’re just starting out or are experienced and guilty of having become a little complacent.
There are more inductions than any hypnotist would ever need and each is covered with the same attention to detail. Something of a bonus here for me is when the new “Bad Boy” of UK Hypnosis Rob Temple steps up to show his ingenious See-saw Induction. His demo leaves me itching to perform it myself.
Rather than just act as superfluous credits on the cover, Rob and other guests are utilised perfectly throughout the course and each is a great presenter and speaker in his own right, demonstrating the same enthusiasm for their chosen artform as the man himself.
To say much more would probably be classed as a spoiler, but I have to just add that the bonus DVD (regularly referred to during the main presentation) in my opinion is worth the price of this set all on its own.
If I have anything negative to say, apart from the fact that the bad language might not be to everyone’s taste it would only be that like most DVDs in this field, production values and quality are a little lacking, but that can be easily forgiven for the quantity and quality of content on offer here.
A full transcript would also have been a welcome addition for those who have difficulty with Northern English accents or of different learning styles, but these really are very minor niggles making an otherwise 5 star review a 4.9!
Whatever you might think of self-professed “King of Hypnotists” Jonathan Royle, that’s unlikely to change very much, but if you are too stubborn to put any preconceptions aside to buy and watch this DVD set, then you’re really missing out on an excellent hypnosis training product.
I’m really happy to have this as part of my hypnosis collection and have little doubt that if this is your first purchase in this field, you’ll probably have little need for very much else.

This triple DVD effort is titled See-Saw Inductions – Stage, Street & Clinical Hypnosis Exposed, and includes over six hours of hypnosis training.
DVD 1 is basically a complete show by Robert Temple, filmed in a pub somewhere. This is really useful to study patter, pacing and style, and sees Robert in a noisy pub environment tacking subjects with very short attention spans. Temple knows his stuff, and even though he’s very young, his confidence and grasp of an audience is impressive.
DVD 2, sees Royle and Temple discuss hypnosis, and Temple shows his ‘See-Saw Induction’, which is very impressive. Royle has toned-down his normal abrasive style, and if he would go slightly more up-market, he would benefit even more. There’s also the ‘Standing/Sitting Crocodile Induction’, and Royle’s ‘Snip & Drop rapid induction.
There’s far too much to talk about in a single review, but this set basically includes all you need to get you kick-started into the world of hypnosis.
This 20+ hour audio and dvd package also contains a 513 page pdf course manual which includes training in advanced levels of hypnosis and NLP, marketing, advertising and promotion, secrets of cold reading, and mentalism effects. I thought I’d offer an alternative view as I have watched his DVDs (yes I do watch and study as many different people as I can, but I do have a social life honest! )
I borrowed his DVD set (Confessions/Secrets & No Such Thing) from a fellow therapist out of interest and initially did not warm to him or his take on “No such thing as hypnosis”. However I understood how a view such as this would be helpful in terms of protecting a stage hypnotist (or even hypnotherapist) from made up claims in order to procure financial gain from legal compensation.
On his Confessions DVD set he explaind his marketing strategy of being the rudest hypnotist out there and how this has helped promote his business and seminars. He deliberately courts controversy as he believes “there’s no such thing as bad publicity” and let’s be honest, we’ve all heard of him.
He also explains how he was trying to lure Mazur Mahmood (apologies about spelling) from the News of the World to buy these fake coins (and other stuff he had planned) to expose him for creating sensationalist headlines by alledgedly duping celebs. I’m not sure of the validity of this, I am merely recounting what I remember watching him say.
The bit about hypnotising women to believe he was Robbie Williams was also a publicity stunt and the actual programme is shown during the DVD.
Towards the end of the Confessions DVD he does show a more caring side (also in the Hypnotherapy DVDs) and I have to say towards the end I warmed to the guy.
You get what you pay for with Jonathon Royle (or Alex Smith as I believe he’s killed off the Royle character?), he is a stage hypnotist and magician (he demonstrates some great magic tricks which have made me really popular at dinner parties) after all.

I did a weekend course with Jonathan Royale in April 2006. He was very funny, knowledgeable and extremely hospitable. I had ordered most of his DVD’s from amazon and had watched them before the training. I suppose I knew what to expect and he didn’t dissappoint. It was a fun weekend and all attendees seemed to enjoy themselves. I’m not trying to promote him, I’m just being honest here. What I got out of his training was confidence to just do it. I had been studying and attended training hypnosis/NLP courses for 8 years, but without really feeling confident enough to actually work with the general public. You may say that my trainings werent very good if I couldn’t create a confidence state in myself, but I take full responsibilty for that. Anyway, after the training with Jonathan, I had a new sense of confidence and self belief. This has helped me and thousands of my clients both in person and online since. So, for all the faults that have been pointed out in this interesting discussion, I did gain something valuable from him, which I’m very grateful. I found him to be a nice bloke, but that’s just me.
This may seem biased, but I don’t have anything to gain from writing this. I should add that I think other people may take him more seriously than he takes himself. But I aggree, spam can get a bit annoying after a while, as anyone who puts their email address on their website will no doubt aggree. More annoying than that is all the sales calls I get, but don’t get me started on that. Jason x

Having been a teacher for more years than I want to admit, I have to say Jonathan’s approach is relaxing and refreshing. I have several products from this man. I have also attended a live training event and, frankly, left wondering what all the negativity is about this man – I don’t do politics you see. He is a very knowledgeable man, he gives it to you straight, too straight for some I admit, but he is blinkin’ good at delivering what he has to say – you’ll never fall asleep (from boredom at least!). I use his stuff and it works. I don’t like the production of his DVDs (many are just compressed video files that need to be watched on a pc rather than a telly – but I am a pragmatic guy and remembered the price I paid). I would go to see him again. If you are open minded, you should go and see him. You’ll wonder what all the fuss is about. – Martin.

I have bought a good number of JR’s materials and I have to say that I have found them very helpful and useful. I have to confess that there are times when certain things jar with me. Does he need to swear quite so much? But having said that, there is no doubting his considerable gifts and his insights. This does not mean, of course, that anyone who buys his material will automatically be as good as he is. I have no regrets about having also trained face to face with other trainers. But I have frequently returned to JR’s materials as a resource and will continue to do so. At the moment I have 10 DVD’s produced by Alex and can honestly say that I can’t find any fault. His information on hypnosis and NLP are worth many times the cost of the materials. I then attended one of his training days held with Paul Voodini and can reccomend his easy method of reading tarot. He always over-delivers on the materials that he gave us to take home and I now make money utilising the techniques he has demonstrated.

OK DVD contents. Being shot mainly in the training room, the quality is not as good as you would get at the cinema but you are not paying for that. I had been studying and trying to understand hypnosis for quite a few years and, pretty much I had got a handle on it but it wasn’t until I chanced upon the Jonathan Royle complete hypnosis course on eBay that the penny really dropped. I have to say it made quite a clatter!
I am happy to tell the world that it was Alex/Jonathan that finally showed me the truth. Not only that but he even showed me how to make a living at it! Better than a living if I wanted! The course contained LITERALLY everything I would need to start and run a hypnosis business.
