Well what can I honestly, truly and sincerely say about this 284 Paged Hard Back Book entitled “Recovery – Freedom From Our Addictions by British Comedian, Actor and TV Presenter Russell Brand ???
Firstly I’d have to point out that the main core of the book is Russell sharing his own interpretation of the Classic 12 Steps Recovery Programme as used by the Likes of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Narcotics Anonymous (NA) and other similar organisations around the world of which there are literally hundreds if not more like thousands of them.
Secondly I’d have to be honest and upfront and state that as someone who has been treating people with Hypnotherapy, NLP and other Similar Psychological Treatment Techniques Since Late 1989, and as someone who has rather a lot of training, qualifications and most importantly of all real world experience in these areas I concluded many, many years ago that 12 Step Programmes DO NOT WORK IN THE LONG TERM..
Yes it’s true that Russell Brand within his book will declare in an evangelical manner that the 12 Step Programme has saved his life, saved him and helped make him a better person and I have no doubt that he currently believes that to be true.
However as an experienced Mind Therapy Practitioner who has helped, over the years numerous former Alcoholics, Drug Addicts and well pretty much all kinds of “addicts” you can think of, and also as someone who prior to the end of 1997, had themselves experienced a period of Drug (Cocaine & Cannabis) and Alcohol dependency amongst other “Addictions” that no longer hold any control over me as they once did in the past, I once again call bullshit on the 12 steps programmes.
You see whilst Russell no doubt genuinely feels it is working for him, the trouble is what is working is another form of “Addiction” and “Dependency” namely one on the 12 Step Programme and all that entails.
And one major element of what it entails is to think of yourself as in “RECOVERY” which means that every time you say you are in “Recovery” or think that phrase you are in fact giving yourself the suggestion that you have not yet fully recovered and thus A MAJOR SUGGESTION that you have not yet overcome the issue/s and thus in turn this makes the chance of Relapse and/or Symptom Substitution to another harmful addiction even more likely.
As an ethical Mind Therapy Practitioner I always operate from the point of view of wanting to get my clients out of therapy as quickly, safely, morally and ethically as possible, whilst also ensuring that they are truly set FREE in life.
Sadly it’s my conclusion that 12 Step Programmes DO NOT set people free but rather lead to dependency on the Programme, which due to the way it is structured is always compounding the idea and inbuilt negative suggestion that Relapse and/or Negative Symptom Substitution is a highly likely possibility.
Rather than saying you are in “Recovery” (which has the inbuilt negative suggestion that you have not yet recovered and overcome things and so relapse is likely) instead why not seek treatment from someone who will help to set you free and enable you to Feel that you are FULLY RECOVERED, whilst enabling you to truly Believe that you have left your past Addictions Behind positively and permanently once and for all ??
Unfortunately that is NOT what the 12 Step Programme is about and that is why as a Self-Help Book or Personal Change Tool I cannot in all Honestly or from a Point of view of Professional Ethics recommend this book to the general public at large, other than for those who wish to learn more about what 12 Step Programmes are and how they are structured so that they can then find a BETTER solution for themselves and/or their clients..
As you read Russell’s book, as with many books I’ve read in the past by users of the 12 Step Programmes, it becomes clear that great importance is being placed by him on the need to feel “Loved, Wanted, Needed, Appreciated, Cared For, Cherished and Valued” in life so as to positively fill that “Hole” that was previously being filled by Drugs, Alcohol, Sex or whatever other Addiction was relevant at the time.
Now when it comes to the Human Needs of feeling these things I 100% agree and indeed its something I talk about briefly and its importance to the therapeutic process in my Published Clinical Paper at the following link:
HOWEVER they are Human Needs that a person can be helped to “Feel” and “Believe” are a positive part of their life, without the need to make them dependent on a long-term 12 Step Programme which by virtue of its structure is itself a Negative Suggestion that Relapse and/or Symptom Substitution is likely to occur.
In short the book “Recovery” by Russell Brand is very well written and proved to be a highly enjoyable and entertaining read and so on that basis alone I recommend it as a “Good Read”
However if you’d like to understand yourself more fully in a manner that truly could lead to true total “Freedom” in life, or you work with clients and want to discover how to set them “free” from such Addictions then as Egotistical as it may sound I would have to say this book is not the best resource for you and indeed you’d be better checking out the video training courses below.
