Is Hypnosis the Ultimate Weight Loss Pill ?
By: Dr. Jonathan Royle – www.magicalguru.com
Recently Sky Television’s Star Presenter of Fat Families and Leading Weight Loss
Authority Steve Miller posted a question to his colleagues on Facebook.

Steve Miller Clinical Hypnotherapist
That Question was quite simply:
“What Do Weight Loss Hypnotherapists Actually Do (The Good Ones That Is!) ??”
Well as you can imagine this stimulated much debate and many different answers,
after some thought on the subject I decided to put this blog post together to give you
all my thoughts, ideas and verdict on the subject.
So here we go with some often Controversial ideas mixed with ones that are far more
established and will be easier for most people to accept…
IS HYPNOSIS THE ULTIMATE WEIGHT LOSS PILL?
Having been a Professional Hypnotherapy Practitioner, Stage-Hypnotist and Hypnosis Trainer for over 25 years it is my experience and sincere belief that Hypnotism is the Ultimate Weight Loss Pill.
Hypnotists are perceived as being Powerful individuals with the ability to Control and Manipulate peoples minds and as seen in the movies and on TV make them do things they would not normally do.

Dr. Jonathan Royle – Hypnotist – Circa 1990
Therefore as a Hypnotist you truly do have a Power as that is the power of peoples perceptions and internal beliefs, sadly so many Hypnotherapists give up this power by explaining (incorrectly) on their websites, in their leaflets and face to face with clients that Hypnotherapy is not the same as what they have seen on TV and in the Films.
Your Making A Big Mistake!
Personally I would say that explaining such “difference” is the biggest mistake any Hypnotherapist can make. The moment you do this you are effectively telling the client that what they thought is wrong and you are immediately giving away a lot of the power you could have used to help them more rapidly and effectively.
Use Their Perceptions & Belief to Yours & Their Advantage
Far Better to tell them they are right and make them feel good about being right and then use this to your advantage, an example of how I do this is by saying to the client:
“Now you may have the impression that when you are Hypnotised, that I will be able to make you cluck like a chicken and bark like a dog, and in truth yes I most certainly can, however that takes time and as you’ve only paid for 60 minutes of my time, you can either pay me some more money and we can do the silly stuff, or we can just get down to business and use this time to help you achieve XYZ”
You Are The Magic Pill
You see the perception and belief in your clients in you as a “Powerful Hypnotist” is in itself a hugely powerful Placebo Response Trigger and I have found that the Placebo Response has a far greater involvement in the success that Hypnotherapists achieve than most would care to admit or even realise.

Dr. Jonathan Royle – King of Hypnotists
Other Important Points to Consider…
Positive thinking they say leads to positive actions and in turn to positive results. Indeed this is very true where Weight Loss is concerned as if the client does not believe that they can lose weight then they are likely to Self-Sabotage and possibly even make things worse than they currently are. Hypnosis is extremely effective in helping us to help the client positively reprogramme their Personal Neck Top Computers (Brains).
Lot’s of little eating, exercise and lifestyle changes, that bit by bit combine together to a sum bigger than it’s parts are in my opinion and experience far more effective in the long term than sudden massive changes that are more likely to only be sustained in the very short term before being dropped again before they have had time to become ingrained as a positive habit.

Weight Loss Master Steve Miller Founder of The Association of Weight Loss Hypnotherapists
Anxiety and Stresses of the clients everyday life may well be what is pushing them towards comfort eating or “eating as a reward” syndrome and in this case Hypnosis can produce amazing results in helping the client to overcome and deal with the Stresses and Anxiety’s of everyday life far more effectively, thus in turn it becomes easier to do the other things that will help them to achieve the Weight Loss they desire.
Confidence, or rather a lacking of and imbalance in the clients Self-Image, Self-Confidence, Self-Esteem and Self-Control (Will Power) is, I have found, more often than not a major reason why they have put on weight and are unable to lose it. Again Hypnosis can and does work wonders in helping people to repair and increase their Self-Image, Self-Confidence, Self-Esteem and Self-Control and when these things are helped the Weight often starts to drop off as they in turn find themselves more motivated to do the right things.

Steve Miller Has Some Controversial Ideas but they Attract Lots of Media and Clients
Every Human Being on this planet, deep down at an unconscious level wants to, and more importantly needs to feel, Loved, Wanted, Needed, Appreciated, Cared For, Cherished and Valued. If there are any imbalances (as most often there will be) in any of these areas, then in turn it will have a negative effect on the clients Self-Image, Self-Confidence, Self-Esteem and Self-Control. So helping the client to Psychologically learn to Love Themselves is very important and Hypnosis is a great tool for this.
Because Diet’s quite simply do not work in the long-term, it is hugely important to help the client devise, implement and maintain a realistically sustainable positive lifestyle change. After all in essence, for the vast majority of clients that seek Weight Loss Hypnosis, the only real ways to lose weight are to eat less calories than they are currently taking in and to burn off more calories than they currently do. As simplistic as that may sound it is undeniably true as Bob Schwartz explains in his excellent book “Diet’s Don’t Work” which was first published back in 1982.

The Association of Weight Loss Hypnotherapists (AWLH) Is one of the few indeed currently only one (other than my own) Associations I would encourage Hypnotherapy Practitioners to Join.
Obesity is becoming for many a Catch 22 Problem whereby the Stresses, Tensions, Worries, Anxieties and other negatives of everyday life may well have contributed to them gaining weight and taken them to a point where they feel they have no escape. Using Hypnosis we can rapidly help them to overcome these internal issues and reprogramme positively their reactions to external stimuli so that finally they are able to find the Key to unlock themselves from this Prison of Fat.
P.L.A.C.E.B.O. = THE KEY TO SUCCESS
Now in Conclusion Let Me Tell You One of the Biggest Secrets of all….
Many clients already consciously know exactly what they need to do in order to Lose Weight and to then effectively manage and sustain that new life, even more are already aware at an unconscious level.
However they can’t just make those changes on their own as to do so they would have to admit to themselves, their friends and family that they could have done so in the past and that it was all their own fault why they had not made these changes sooner.
We as Hypnotherapists give them the perfect Excuse why they are only now going to make the changes and why they did not sooner as they can say to people
“I tried really hard in the past to lose the weight and nothing seemed to work until I was Hypnotized by Jonathan Royle”

Dr. Jonathan Royle – Mind Coach
This immediately removes all blame from them and gives them the perfect excuse for not having made the changes sooner and also gives them permission to change now!
As controversial as this viewpoint may be to many, I would advise you to investigate it further and take a look at the paper I recently had published in “The International Journal of Complementary and Alternative Medicine” which can be seen at this link:

THE ASSOCIATION OF WEIGHT LOSS HYPNOTHERAPISTS
On several occasions in the blog posting above I have mentioned “The Association

TELEVISION’S “FAT FAMILIES” PRESENTER AND
CLINICAL HYPNOTHERAPIST
STEVE MILLER

Steve Miller – Leading Weight Loss Hypnotist
Can Clinical Hypnotherapists Learn From Stage Hypnotists? by Steve Miller.
As a Clinical Practitioner I have always been fascinated by stage hypnotists. Stage is something I would personally never do, however with an open mind and an open heart I set out recently on a journey to understand whether Clinical Hypnotherapists could benefit from listening to the strategies employed by stage hypnotists.
I came across a guy called Jonathan Royle AKA Alex William Smith who I perceived as a radical experienced stage hypnotist but someone who also treats clinical conditions.
Having made contact some time ago I found him straight talking (my preference) and incredibly knowledgeable. Having posed my question to Mr Royle he kindly invited me to sit in one of his training programmes which I did yesterday.
I attended with an open mind and throughout the day listened carefully to his view that hypnosis does not really exist and was nothing more than a ritualistic process.
Indeed I was intrigued to know more and as he continued with what can only be described as an incredible knowledge of hypnosis, my mind opened to his standpoint.
As the day continued he demonstrated his talent for both stage and clinical hypnosis, demonstrating showmanship and rapid induction techniques.
His view that success comes from the practitioner’s own confidence and self belief is something I share. What also struck me was his passion for ethics and care of the client, as well as health and safety in the consulting room.
The day was delivered in a forthright manner and I drew the conclusion that perhaps the day has arrived for clinical schools to open their doors to teaching advanced showmanship and persona management for Hypnotherapists.
As for the question whether or not hypnosis really truly exists, the jury is still out. One thing for sure however is that we should perhaps listen a little more and have an open mind so that we all learn from each other.
